Over the next 10 days, starting today for the 10 Tips in 10 Days LinkedIn campaign, I’m going to be giving you 10 steps to avoid burnout and maintain clarity, as you are rapidly building a business.
Today we’re gonna start with taking 100% responsibility.
Jim Rohn said, “You can’t hire other people to do your pushups for you.” which is absolutely true. If we could do that, that would be fantastic. I’m sure we would all love to make that happen. However, that is not the case. And here’s the deal – each of us has to take 100% responsibility for literally everything that happens in our lives.
Now you might not feel that you are a 100% responsible for everything that is happening, and that’s okay. The point is that you act as if you are literally 100% responsible for everything that is occurring in your life.
One of the things – a concept, an equation – that helps with this, is:
E + R = O
Event + Response = Outcome
Events are things that happen to us. We have no control over them. We then Respond to that event and receive an outcome.
Here’s the key: if you don’t like your outcomes, then change your responses.
There is a 99% likelihood that you are not able to change the events. You can’t go back physically in time and change those events. What you can do is change your response to those events and get a different outcome.
Also wrapped up into this concept of a 100% responsibility, is giving up all blaming, complaining and excuse making.
People blame others when they don’t get what they want. Blaming is purely a response that does not give you the outcome you want, so you have to give up blaming.
Complaining is the second thing you need to drop. People complain when they have a reference point for something they prefer that they are not willing to risk creating. Let me repeat that because that’s important – people complain when they have a reference point for something they prefer that they are not willing to risk creating. No one complains about gravity. You can’t do anything about gravity, that would be ridiculous. You only complain about things that you can actually change in your life. So, as part of accepting a 100% responsibility for yourself, you need to give up all complaining.
Finally, you also need to stop making excuses. Instead, be solution oriented. Complete this sentence:
“If I were to take 5% more responsibility for <fill in the blank>”, then what would be the outcome of that? For instance, if I were to take 5% more responsibility for my life and well-being, what would be the outcome? If I were to take 5% more responsibility for my business, what would be the outcome? Or in your relationships, anything.
Another thing to do is instead of saying, “I can’t” do something, change it to, “I won’t” do something or “I choose not to” do something. When you say, “I won’t.” instead of “I can’t.”, it puts the control back in your hands. And the reality is you could do that thing, you just won’t do it. So instead of saying, “I can’t.”, say, “I won’t.”
Again, today’s tip for helping you to avoid burnout and maintain clarity while building a business is take 100% responsibility. You need to give up all blaming, complaining and excuse making. And if you don’t like the outcomes you are getting in your life, change your responses to the events.
That’s it for me today. Stay tuned for the other nine items in videos to come.
