Keeping Your Head Straight As An Entrepreneur

I am sitting in my car waiting to get my youngest from school. This is something I do three days a week. I’ve done it without fail for months. In fact, being able to do things like this is one of the main reasons why I work for myself, and I work from home – so that I can do things like this.

As I was driving over here, I was thinking about how we as entrepreneurs keep our heads straight when we’re building a business. We’re trying to move as quickly as possible; we are in fact moving very quickly. However, sometimes things just don’t seem to be happening as fast as we would like them to or as fast as we can actually move.

And it’s those times when it’s really critical to have practices where we can center ourselves and keep our heads straight, because it is very, very easy to get caught up in negativity and negative thinking. That’s when I really start questioning myself.

Is what I’m doing working? Is it not working? Am I not doing the right thing? Am I not doing the thing enough?

There’s so much stuff that can start coming up that can sidetrack us from where it is we’re trying to go.

One of the daily practices I have is I meditate. I meditate each morning. I wake up at 4 a.m., I make chai, I have a greens drink, go downstairs, drink my chai, relax, get in a good head space, and then I meditate for an hour. Everyday.

This helps me to center myself and start my morning well, as opposed to diving right into work or diving right into email. I can say for me if I started doing those things first thing in the morning it can make me really anxious – no joke. So I have practices to center myself.

But I can also use these same practices at any time during the day.

I’ve sat in Starbucks before, with my beverage, and just closed my eyes. I turned on some music and zoned out for 10 or 15 minutes. Were people looking at me weird? I don’t know. I honestly don’t care, because I was re-centering myself for the day.

I learned a long time ago that you can restart your day literally at any point.

So if things are getting overwhelming, things seem to be going crazy with your day, all that negativity starts creeping in, you need to get yourself back to a positive place as quickly as possible.

One of the best ways I’ve found to do that is to put on some headphones, put on some music – some nice calm, soothing music – and take a number of deep, cleansing, relaxing breaths, breaths that will fill your belly. Really deep, relaxing breaths. And just zone out. Take it easy, reset, regather yourself and keep going.

That’s what I do. But I’m curious what you do to recenter yourself, or to center yourself first thing in the morning, or maybe in the evening. Do you meditate? Do you listen to music? Do you go outside for a walk if it’s not negative 20 degrees? Or something else?

What do you do to keep on the straight and narrow path? What do you do to keep yourself moving ahead as an entrepreneur, going through your day?

Let me know in the comments below.

I look forward to hearing from you, and maybe using one of your tips.
