If you live in the past you’re depressed. If you live in the future you’re anxious.
Successful entrepreneurs wake up each day and ask themselves one question: “How can I make money today?”
Why is this?
When I started my first business 18 years ago, everyone wanted to see your business plan. These things were 30+ pages of research and guesswork to show how an idea would make $X amount of money in 3-5+ years time. And yes, when I graduated with my MBA in 2009 business plans were still a thing.
The issue with creating a large business plan though is humans have a ridiculously horrible history with estimating. 10+ years in software development has showed me that.
It’s not that people are stupid, it’s that we cannot possibly foresee everything that will come up in the course of a project. The longer the project the more factors we’re blind to.
Instead of spending weeks or months creating a business plan, many startups use a single page tool called the Business Model Canvas. You can crank one out in a matter of minutes, and even create multiple ones for a single business.
Here’s what it looks like:
So what does this have to do with focus?! Plenty!
Keeping things simple, for instance asking yourself a singular question each morning – “How can I make money today?” – keeps you in the present moment, rather than becoming anxious about all the things you need to do to create a successful business.
Am I suggesting you don’t do any planning? No! Absolutely not.
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

What I’m saying is planning too far out is a complete waste of time. So much will happen in the next three, six and twelve months that you couldn’t have anticipated from where you now sit.
So create your plans, and then each day focus on what you need to do today to be successful.
